The
Future
Despite some advances in nuclear weapon technology that allows the
weapon to explode underground, the fact remains that innocent people
will die during a nuclear assault. According to the National Research
Council (NRC), an underground nuclear attack could kill a million
people. This figure of a million deaths is connected to an underground
nuclear attack. One of the intended purposes of the subterranean nuclear
attack would be reducing civilian casualties. The number of estimated
deaths for a surface nuclear attack would be much higher. The NRC
estimates 2 to 10 million killed if the nuclear attack was on the
earth’s surface. The loss of human life from the initial explosion alone
would be enormous.

Those that survive the
initial obliteration must persevere through the massive panic that would
spread after such an attack. Most likely, rumors of a nuclear attack
would precede the attack itself. This would result in an accumulation of
necessaries by the general public. After the actual attack, water and
food supplies will be already depleted. The rush to get to safer ground
will be completely chaotic. Lawlessness will sweep among the
terror–stricken masses. Those with life-threatening injuries would
likely never find medical aid in the disarray. In addition, there would
be unimaginable depredation to the atmosphere, animals and nature. The
afflicted country would then take revenge. The pattern of events would
repeat itself. The purpose of the next nuclear attack would be to create
even more destruction than the first strike. Since it is human nature to
impart revenge, it is our belief that the continued proliferation of
nuclear weapons would lead to global disaster. |
